What a great piece. Thank you for the humility of admitting, as I try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to do also, that the things in life that we don't "get" might be a failing of our own rather than a statement on the worth of the thing being considered. After all, those people who love rap music can't ALL be wrong, can they?
And thank you for the statement on intoxication and the very appeal of wine. I love the comparison with music; it's very apt. I drink for that, and the vast majority of the time, I am limited in how much I imbibe by my dislike of the unwanted side-effect of inebriation. Were it possible to produce alcohol-free wines of the quality, uniqueness, character, and (dare I say) musicality of 'real' wine, I'd gravitate to them. Sadly, I don't think that will ever be the case.
Keep writing, I enjoy it almost as much as I enjoy your wines. I am probably not going to take a liking to "natural wine" either, but perhaps I'll stop turning up my nose when it is suggested.
In truth, we all wish to do the minimum and produce healthy and authentic wines. What led the natties to backseat driving was our reticence to explain what we’re doing in service to those shared goals and why we make those choices. We have reaped the whirlwind through our own lack of candor. Opportunist influencers like Alice Feiring exploited this reticence. We left ourselves wide open. No wonder so many thought they were “drinking poison”.
Hear, hear! Especially on your thoughts of music and wine. I've never been a fan of extremism in either world. Harmony is what I long for.
And what's the opposite of harmony? Not dissonance. The opposite of harmony is unison. We only get harmony when we sing different melodies together.
A good point! It's what makes the discussion so fun.
